A softly draped blue fabric covers a bust and gives the composition a calm, almost sculptural quality. The model’s warm brown tone creates an appealing contrast with the cool blue of the fabric, while light and shadow impressively emphasise the three-dimensional form of the subject. The deliberately restrained composition draws attention to form, material and the subtle nuances of the colour treatment.
This work was created during Iris’s studies at the Freie Kunstschule Böblingen in 1995/96, as part of a study exercise based on a carefully arranged bust. Even in this early work, her confident sense of proportion, material effects and the precise rendering of light and shadow is clearly evident.
